Man, counterweights, what a topic this has become.

Seems you folks are starting to get the right idea. A couple hundred bucks is a small price to pay.

I tell this to customers all the time, there reaction is jaded due to the fact that I am a salesman. However, reality will always rear it's ugly head and the ballast boxes sell. Usually a few days AFTER the tractor is delivered. On some occasions, that is too late.

I have never sold anything to a dead person, but remeber this guys............I have sold things to the dead mans widow. And her and her new man, armed with the cash from her deceased's insurance policy, have purchased things she could not afford while he was dead. Such as a ballast box.

Now, another man is raising his children. He will not see his daughter's wedding, nor his first grandchild.

We all get caught up in the dollars, we seem to forget our cents (or sense, wichever applies).

and I have some info to refer customers who need to read all these posts.

This is a great board, lot's of info, but more importantly, it's couple with expeirience. One without the other can be dangerous. Thanks all!!

There is a lever located benieth the Joystick for the loader.

In one position, it locks the Joystick so when not useing the loader, accidently hitting the joysticl will not move the loader

The last position is for normal operation, but not when useing the loader.

The center position (Open Book picture) is the Re-gen position. When operating the loader, use this position. It will keep the bucket from locking up when dumping.

I could get technical and tell you why, but it's time to feed the cows.

TomG had some good ideas, and he is right, no matter where the exhaust comes out, noplace is the perfect place. But the amount of soot you describe sounds excessive.

A tune up may be in order.

Plugged injector nozzles, valve adjustment, injection timeing, or maybe a little of all three can cause excessive soot. Even something as simple as a plugged air filter can be the culprit. I'd check it out.

If you are useing a MMM. There will not be enough clearence with the Galaxy Tires. They will hit the mower deck when you are turning and the front axle pivots.

This only happens in a severe twist, and when it does, the deck could be damaged.

I had a customer who passed on my advice and went out on his own and put on the Galaxy Tires.

I sold him a second new deck in a few weeks.

Better pass on the deal if useing a MMM

good question on the MMM's

yes, they are a little better in handleing. But mounting and dismounting is a disadvantage. The MMM's are a little higher priced also.

My expeirience has taught me a few thimgs on the subject.

here is what Ive learned:

No 1 Thr rear mower will mow under low trees much like a front mower, say a Grasshopper, but you have to back up to do this

No 2 In my area, most women have some problems getting used to looking back at the rear while mowing with a 3pt mower. At least this is the feedback I get.Easy ladies!!!!!! This is the comments I here when following up on sales I have made.

No 3. If you change jobs from loader to mower very often, the belly mower can be a little bit of a pain to mount and dismount.

No 4. with a 3pt mower you can get a mode that is rear discharge. I like this option, it is narrower ( no side chute) and they seem to spread the cut grass more evenly. They do cost a little more than side a side discharge, but I feel it's worth it.

No 5. The belly mower will probably be the one your better half wants to run, and it will be a heck of a good mower, but you'll get tired of taking it on and off.

SSSSooo. I guess the real question is who will win??

I know what you mean about the Op man being unclear.

In my opinion, I would try to avoid raising the front of the tractor off the ground.

I think your tractor is strong enough to take the abuse, but a couple safety issues come to mind.

No 1 This raises the center of gravity of the unit, making it more susceptable to tipping over.

No 2 when in this position, you are getting to the edge of the envelope on the capacity of the equipment. Once the front of the tractor is off the ground, raising it farther willl produce no more leverage, so you may as well try a different approach.

Adding ballast in the form of dirt in the bucket may help keep the front end down, but it also puts more stress on the tractor, possibly exceeding the limits of it's design.

However, I am as guilty as the next guy for not giving up.
